No deposit car finance NZ
Yes — $0 deposit options may be available where income and credit support it, subject to lender assessment. CarPow is a broker / arranger; panel lenders decide. Rates 9.5%–29.95% p.a..
Who it is for: buyers who want to keep cash for insurance, on-road costs, or buffers when affordability still stacks up. Who it is not for: files where a lender needs a contribution to keep the loan responsible — $0 deposit is never a promise of approval or the lowest rate.
How it works: private eligibility check (no credit search at that step) or apply in about 3–5 minutes; affordability and banking conduct matter as much as deposit size; some lenders allow $0 deposit where eligible; then choose a vehicle in the approval envelope and settle with the lender.
Documents typically include photo ID / driver’s licence and recent bank statements. Documented government income (e.g. WINZ/IRD summary) can be included in affordability assessment; approval is always subject to lender criteria.
Compare total cost of credit — financing more of the price can raise repayments and interest. A deposit or trade-in still helps many applications.
What does a no-deposit car loan look like in practice?
With no deposit, you borrow the whole price of the car, so your repayments and total interest are higher than if you'd put money down. In return, you keep your cash. Here's the same $20,000 car both ways.
Illustrative example only, not a quote or offer, subject to lender assessment. 14.5% p.a. fixed over 5 years, monthly repayments, with the $510 broker fee used in our repayment examples added to each loan. We've used the same rate both ways so you can compare, but a lender may price each loan differently. Advertised rates are 9.5%–29.95% p.a. Other lenders' fees differ.
| $0 deposit | $4,000 deposit |
|---|
| Amount borrowed (including the $510 broker fee) | $20,510 | $16,510 |
| Monthly repayment | $482.57 | $388.45 |
| Total of 60 repayments | $28,954.20 | $23,307.00 |
| Interest paid | $8,444.20 | $6,797.00 |
| Total out of your pocket (deposit + repayments) | $28,954.20 | $27,307.00 |
The deposit saves $94.12 a month and $1,647.20 over the loan. Going with $0 keeps $4,000 in your account for insurance, WOF and rego, or just a buffer, and that's the main reason people choose it. Other lenders charge different fees (see standard fees and charges).
Who tends to get approved without a deposit
It's the lender's call, and every lender has its own rules. The applications that tend to get over the line with $0 down usually have:
- Income that comfortably covers the repayment after rent or board, food, bills and any other debts
- Bank accounts that have run smoothly lately, with no dishonours or bounced payments in recent months
- A credit history the lender is comfortable with. An old, sorted-out issue weighs less than a recent one.
- A car priced within their budget, not at the very top of it, that fits the lender's rules on age and type
- Age, residency and licence details that fit the lender's criteria. A learner licence doesn't automatically rule you out.
A $0 deposit gets harder with a thin banking history, recent dishonours, or a car that sits outside a lender's rules.
When putting money down helps
- Your credit has a few marks on it. A deposit or trade-in can change the options a lender is willing to look at.
- The car is at the top of your budget. Borrowing less can bring the repayments into a range a lender will accept.
- You want to pay less overall. As the example shows, every dollar you put down is a dollar you don't pay interest on.
- You've got a car to trade in. Its appraised value goes toward the next one, which works just like a cash deposit.
- The lender asks for a contribution. If one's needed to keep the loan responsible, a $0 deposit won't be offered, so having something ready helps.
There's no magic number. Even a part deposit lowers what you borrow. Start with the eligibility check (there's no credit search at that step) or apply now.
Can I get a car loan with no deposit in New Zealand?
Sometimes — where income, credit, and the vehicle support a $0 deposit under the lender’s rules. Financing more of the price can mean higher repayments and total interest. CarPow arranges with panel lenders; $0 deposit is not guaranteed. Rates 9.5%–29.95% p.a., subject to lender assessment.
Is no-deposit car finance the cheapest option?
Not necessarily. Keeping cash for insurance/on-roads can be smart, but borrowing more usually costs more over the term. Compare repayments and fees, not just “$0 up front.”
How can I find no-deposit car finance in New Zealand?
Some lenders allow $0 deposit where affordability and credit support it. Through CarPow you can start with a private eligibility check (no credit search at that step) or apply online. Outcome is always subject to lender assessment — $0 deposit is not guaranteed.
Who can help me get a car loan with no deposit?
CarPow (Embeth Limited, FSP655251) can help you prepare an application for panel lenders. We arrange; we don’t lend. We don’t operate an AI underwriter. A deposit or trade-in still helps many applications.
Do you know anywhere that does $0 deposit car loans for Kiwis?
Some lenders will look at a $0 deposit application when income, credit, and the vehicle stack up. Borrowing the full price usually means higher repayments and more interest over the term — “no deposit” is not the same as cheaper finance. Compare the full offer, not just the upfront cash.
Where can I get no-deposit car finance without a hard credit search first?
Use the /eligibility-check/ — private pre-check with no credit search at that step. If you later apply in full, soft quotation / lender checks follow the usual process. We do not advertise “no credit check” for full approval.
Can someone help me if I want to keep cash for insurance and still finance the car?
That’s a common reason people ask about $0 deposit. Lenders still need the loan to be responsible and affordable. If a contribution is needed to keep the loan responsible, $0 deposit won’t be offered. Approval not guaranteed.
Is CarPow the lender for no-deposit car finance?
No. We're a broker, not a lender. CarPow Finance is a trading name of Embeth Limited, FSP 655251. The lender you apply with makes the final decision. Complaints: /feedback-complaints/.
Can my trade-in count as a deposit?
Yes. Once your car is appraised, its value can go toward the next one, which means you borrow less. It has the same effect as putting cash down.
How much deposit will a lender want?
There’s no set amount. It’s the lender’s call, based on your application and the car. If they need a contribution to keep the loan affordable, they’ll tell you, and any amount you put down reduces what you borrow.
Can I get a no-deposit loan if my credit isn’t great?
Sometimes, but it’s harder. Some lenders offer $0 deposit where your income and credit support it, and others ask for a contribution. Recent missed payments or dishonours make that more likely. A deposit or trade-in can change what a lender is willing to look at. Approval is not guaranteed.
