Car loan comparison
Compare how CarPow presents applications to a panel of lenders so you can make a clearer decision on your next vehicle.
This hub is about the comparison process and what to weigh (rate, fees, term, affordability) — not ranking “best company” or “most suitable lender.”
Each lender still assesses affordability and credit in context. Soft eligibility check first if you want a private step with no credit search at that point.

What does a car loan actually cost in total?
Take the repayment, multiply it by the number of repayments, then add any fees you pay upfront. That's the real price of the loan, and it's the number worth comparing. Here's how the rate and the term change it when you borrow $15,000.
Illustrative examples only, not a quote or offer, subject to lender assessment. Each example is $15,000 plus the $510 broker fee used in our repayment examples, so $15,510 is financed. Fixed rate, monthly repayments. Advertised rates are 9.5%–29.95% p.a. Other lenders' fees differ.
Same loan, different rates
$15,000 plus the $510 broker fee, over 5 years (60 monthly repayments)
| Rate | Monthly repayment | Total of 60 repayments | Total cost on top of the $15,000 |
|---|
| 14.5% p.a. | $364.92 | $21,895.20 | $6,895.20 |
| 29.95% p.a. | $501.32 | $30,079.20 | $15,079.20 |
At the top of the advertised range, 29.95% instead of 14.5%, the same car costs $136.40 more a month, or $8,184.00 more over the loan. That's why your credit profile and affordability matter so much to the rate you're offered.
Same rate, different terms
$15,000 plus the $510 broker fee, at 14.5% p.a.
| Term | Monthly repayment | Total repaid | Total cost on top of the $15,000 |
|---|
| 3 years (36 repayments) | $533.87 | $19,219.32 | $4,219.32 |
| 5 years (60 repayments) | $364.92 | $21,895.20 | $6,895.20 |
| 7 years (84 repayments) | $294.96 | $24,776.64 | $9,776.64 |
Going from 5 to 7 years takes $69.96 off the monthly repayment but adds $2,881.44 in interest. A longer term makes the repayments easier to live with, but the car costs more by the end. Pick the shortest term you can comfortably afford.
What the fee adds
The $510 broker fee is added to the loan, so you pay interest on it too. At 14.5% p.a. over 5 years, the same $15,000 without the fee would be $352.92 a month. The fee adds $12.00 a month, or $720.00 over the loan. Other lenders charge different fees. You'll find the ones that commonly apply on our standard fees and charges page, and your loan disclosure shows the exact amounts before you sign.
Check it yourself: repayment × number of repayments + upfront fees = total cost. Put two offers side by side and compare the totals, not the weekly figure.
How these figures are worked out: standard fixed-rate loan formula, interest calculated monthly, repayments rounded to the nearest cent, total = repayment × number of repayments.
How long does it take, from applying to driving away?
It can move fast once your documents are ready. Lenders on our panel offer same-day decisions, subject to lender assessment. After you sign, payout is usually the same day you sign, or the next day depending on what time you sign, subject to lender assessment. Here's the whole process, in order.
- Check your eligibility (optional). It takes about 30–60 seconds, and there's no credit search at this step.
- Apply online. The form takes about 3–5 minutes on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Send your documents. We need both sides of your driver licence and 3 months of bank statements, shared through our secure illion connection. Upload everything in your CarPow portal, where you can also see where your application is up to.
- Checks and assessment. We may run a Centrix finance quotation. It's a soft search that doesn't change your credit score, though it can show as a quotation. A lender credit check is only registered if your application goes to a lender for approval. The lender makes the decision.
- Decision. Once your documents are in: same-day decisions, subject to lender assessment. If the lender needs more information, we'll come back to you straight away. Approval is not guaranteed.
- Choose your car. Pick a CarPow Cars vehicle or one from a dealer, and we'll help you find one that fits your approval. Pre-approval typically lasts 14 days, depending on the lender, subject to re-approval or updated income details to renew, and subject to lender assessment. It's worth choosing sooner rather than later.
- Sign. Your loan documents are electronic, so you sign online.
- Payout and pick-up. The seller is paid directly. Payout is usually the same day you sign, or the next day depending on what time you sign, subject to lender assessment. Then you pick the car up or arrange delivery.
To keep it quick: have your licence handy, know your internet banking login for the statements, and finish the form in one go. If you can, sign early in the day. One complete application beats several half-done ones.
What’s the best car loan in New Zealand right now?
There isn’t one “best” loan for everyone. The better fit is the offer you can afford after living costs — rate, fees, term, and repayments together. CarPow (Embeth Limited, FSP655251) is a broker / arranger that can present your application to panel lenders. Advertised rates 9.5%–29.95% p.a., subject to lender assessment. Approval is not guaranteed. For the rate-band explainer see /cheapest-car-loan-rates/.
Who are the main car finance companies in New Zealand?
NZ car finance includes banks, non-bank vehicle lenders, and brokers. CarPow is a broker / arranger, not a bank and not the lender on the contract. We work with a panel; each lender applies their own criteria. We don’t publish a ranked “top companies” league table.
Is there a better option than going to the bank for a car loan NZ?
Sometimes a non-bank lender or broker pathway fits when a bank won’t, or when you want more than one lender looked at. “Better” means affordable and responsible for you — not a slogan. Banks can still be right for strong files. CarPow can help you apply to panel lenders; they decide.
Should I use dealership finance or a car loan broker in NZ?
Dealer finance is convenient at the yard; a broker pathway lets you prepare one application for a panel without cold-calling every lender. Compare the full offer either way (rate, fees, term, extras). CarPow is a broker / arranger — we don’t sell cars and we don’t lend the money.
Who are the best car loan brokers in New Zealand?
“Best” depends on fit, fees, and whether the broker is transparent that lenders decide. CarPow (Embeth Limited, FSP655251) arranges vehicle finance with panel lenders. We don’t claim to be NZ’s #1 broker. Check FSP details, fees (/standard-fees-and-charges/), and how complaints are handled (/feedback-complaints/).
Is CarPow better than other car finance options in NZ?
It depends what you need. If you want a multi-lender broker pathway online, CarPow may suit. If you already have a sharp bank pre-approval, that can be cheaper. We’re a broker / arranger — not automatically “better” than every bank or dealer offer. Compare total cost and affordability.
Where can I find cheaper car finance in NZ?
Compare total cost of credit, not a headline rate alone. CarPow advertises 9.5%–29.95% p.a. subject to lender assessment. A lower advertised rate elsewhere still has to pass affordability and credit checks. Soft start: /eligibility-check/.
Who can help me compare car loan options without picking one company myself?
A broker/arranger like CarPow can help you prepare an application for panel lenders. Each lender still assesses affordability and credit in context. We don’t claim “most suitable” or “expert match,” and we don’t run an AI underwriter. Start with a private eligibility check (no credit search at that step) or apply when ready.
Where can I get a clearer car loan comparison before I apply?
Use this page for what comparison should cover, then /cheapest-car-loan-rates/ for the rate-band explainer, and /eligibility-check/ for a soft start. A full quote only follows lender assessment of your circumstances and the vehicle.
Is CarPow one of the car loan companies, or a broker?
Broker / arranger. Legal entity: Embeth Limited, FSP655251. Panel lenders set the contractual rate and decide approval. We do not operate an AI underwriter. Advertised rates 9.5%–29.95% p.a., subject to lender assessment.
How do I work out the total cost of a car loan?
Multiply the repayment by the number of repayments, then add any fees you pay upfront. That total is what you’re really comparing. For example, $15,000 plus the $510 broker fee at 14.5% p.a. over 5 years is $364.92 a month, or $21,895.20 over 60 months. That’s $6,895.20 more than the $15,000 you borrowed. It’s illustrative only and subject to lender assessment. Advertised rates are 9.5%–29.95% p.a., and other lenders’ fees differ.
Is a longer loan term cheaper?
The repayments are lower, but the loan costs more overall. On $15,000 plus the $510 broker fee at 14.5% p.a., going from 5 years to 7 years drops the monthly repayment by $69.96 and adds $2,881.44 in interest. It’s illustrative only and subject to lender assessment. Pick the shortest term you can comfortably afford.
How long does it take to get a car loan through CarPow?
The eligibility check takes about 30–60 seconds, and there’s no credit search at that step. The full application takes about 3–5 minutes. Once your documents are in, lenders on our panel offer same-day decisions, subject to lender assessment. After you sign, payout is usually the same day you sign, or the next day depending on what time you sign, subject to lender assessment. Approval is not guaranteed.
How does the seller get paid?
Once you’ve signed, the seller is paid directly. If you’re buying a CarPow Cars vehicle or one from a dealer, we sort the payment out with them. If the lender allows a private sale, the seller is paid directly into their bank account. Payout is usually the same day you sign, or the next day depending on what time you sign, subject to lender assessment.
